Adventures in Computing: Recovering from OS-induced fuckweasels edition

First, an apology: I'm sorry this has taken so long, but things in the Big Blue Box have been CRAP lately.

And now, on with our story:

It started out simply enough: Windows was SO past due for a nuke & pave, and thanks to a friend of mine with a VLA from Microsoft, I had a few options.
I decided on Server 2012 for a few reasons:
  • As someone who doesn't reboot until he absolutely has to, the theoretical stability benefits of a server-grade OS are a good thing
  • I need an appropriate sandbox to work on stuff for $pico-job, and remote SUCKS for that.
  • S2012 has a nifty feature which helps in the battle of ever-increasing storage space needs: de-duplication. (This will be important later!)
  • It's built on the same tech as Windows 8, except IT HAS A FREAKING START BUTTON (at least on R2, which was the option in question)
So, I installed, transitioned, and all was hunky dory. Then, Windows, being Windows, decided to make with some fuckery of my filesystem. Of Course, it was my BIG drive, the one with all the video and backups of everything else on it. And of course I did not have enough local drive space to just move everything off of it. And of course it was the drive that de-duplication was turned on for.

Because this is, after all, my life.
Cut for those without a rat's ass to give... )

I'm still contemplating explosives though....
